NATURAL MENS HEALTH: WEIGHT

Many men have a tendency to gain weight. The National Health Survey, carried out by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2001, found that 58 per cent of males surveyed were classified as overweight or obese based on their body mass index (BMI). Interestingly, only 30 per cent of males assessed themselves as overweight, indicating a significant gap between perception and reality. These statistics reflect the fact that many men are eating too much of the wrong foods, not exercising enough and are too lazy to change bad habits.

The rule of thumb is this: a man's fat should not exceed 22 per cent of individual body mass. If body fat is measured in excess of this, an individual is classified as obese. Obesity or being overweight has a detrimental effect on your quality of life. Your susceptibility to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, infertility and other major illnesses is increased dramatically.

Men are particularly prone to accumulating fat around the abdominal area (the tummy tyre or pot belly), which is regarded as potentially one of the most dangerous forms of obesity. Not only can this be dangerous for your health, it can also be uncomfortable and restrictive of your movement.
