THE FEMALE GENITAL ORGANS: THE EXTERNAL GENITALS - CLITORIS

At the front of the vulva is a small sensitive organ called the clitoris. It is similar to the penis of the male, though of course much smaller, being enclosed within the vulva, and is capable of erection. As in the case of the male organ, it has a small prepuce, or foreskin, which can usually be drawn back without difficulty, but sometimes has to be loosened by a physician in case of adhesion. Within the foreskin of the clitoris a greasy, white substance, called smegma, is formed, which if not removed, becomes solid and offensive in odor.

The clitoris and the entire area of the vulva constitute a ource of sexual excitation. Contact with the walls of the vagina is also stimulating, especially after some sex experience. The tendency under the influence of satisfactory sex relations is generally for a woman first to be capable of excitation through the contacts of the clitoris and other parts of the vulva, and later through the contacts of both these and the vagina. Either form of excitation normally eventuates in orgasm, or a climax of excitement and nervous discharge, producing rapid contractions and relaxations of pelvic muscles, followed by a desire for repose. The orgasm resulting from clitoridal and vulvar stimulation is less complete than that which occurs when the vaginal reaction is also aroused.
